The 339-mile CHPE transmission line aims to provide hydropower to a million New York City homes. According to EPA data, carbon emissions in the New York City area rose by about 20% between 2019 and 2022. Gas-fired power plants contribute to poor air quality, which can lead to health problems like asthma. The asthma rate for children in New York City, especially in poorer neighborhoods, is one of the highest in the country. New York has six years to achieve its goal of powering 70 percent of its grid with renewable energy.

In 1991, I went to Teotihuacán, Mexico, to watch a total solar eclipse from the Pyramids of the Sun and the Moon. At the time of totality, it just got really dark. I didn’t see a hole in the sky surrounded by a shimmering corona or any other eclipse phenomena: Baily’s beads, the diamond ring. Eclipse-watching, on the other hand, is very much like economics in that it’s vulnerable to all kinds of uncontrollable effects. “People laugh, cry, stare dumbfounded, jump up and down,” Peter Tyson, editor in chief of Sky & Telescope magazine, wrote in a special issue this year.

At an informal gathering last summer at the Executive Mansion in Albany, N.Y., Gov. Kathy Hochul shared an anecdote about making an unpleasant discovery there, not long after taking residence: a painting depicting the marriage of Pocahontas. The governor thought Pocahontas looked young and frightened, and had the painting removed. In its place went what she considered to be a more tasteful portrayal of Native people in Niagara Falls. Ms. Fine said the matter would be looked into.

watch nowHigh schools have been buzzing about financial education. They earned an "A" because in those states, high school graduates in the class of 2023 were required to have taken a personal finance course before graduation. Studies show personal finance education can make a significant difference in young adults' financial behaviors, from improving credit scores and lowering loan delinquency rates to reducing payday lending and helping students make better decisions about college loans. A few states still have 'virtually no requirements'Meanwhile, four states — California, Connecticut, Massachusetts and South Dakota — as well as Washington, D.C., got failing grades, receiving "F"s in this report because they have "virtually no requirements" for personal finance education in high school. Still, advocates in "failing" states, such as California, are working to change the laws to ensure students are guaranteed financial education.

Requiring all students to take a financial literacy course can help reduce such inequality, Mr. Pelletier said. Carly Urban, a professor of economics at Montana State University who studies financial literacy, said that discussions about what topics should be taught in classrooms are often bitterly divisive, but state legislators appear to be finding common ground supporting high school financial instruction. Most American adults said they wanted their states to require a semester- or yearlong financial course to graduate from high school, according to a 2022 poll from the National Endowment for Financial Education. Over the years, questions have arisen about whether high school financial literacy classes are effective. High school financial instruction, she said, “overwhelmingly” improves credit scores, lowers loan delinquency rates and reduces the use of risky services like payday lending.

"These immigration levels will help set the pace of Canada's economic and population growth while moderating its impact on critical systems such as infrastructure and housing," Miller said. Canada's population has grown mainly through immigration, and population growth has helped fuel economic growth in recent years. But some economists have blamed immigration for worsening the country's housing shortage, though immigrants also work in industries like construction that are facing a labor shortage. For this reason, the Bank of Canada has said immigration has been both a driver and a brake for inflation, which stood at 3.8% in September. More consumers mean more demand, which pushes up prices, but immigrants entering the work force also help keep down labor costs.

New York Governor Kathy Hochul speaks during a campaign rally with other New York Democrats, in Yonkers, New York, U.S., November 6, 2022. The 340 mile (547 km) transmission line is a proposed underwater and underground high-voltage direct current power transmission line to deliver the power from Quebec, Canada, to Queens, New York City. The converter station for the line will be the first-ever transformation of a fossil fuel site into a grid-scale zero-emission facility in New York City, its backers say. Once the construction is completed, it will convert 1,250 megawatts of energy from direct current to alternating current power that will be fed directly into the state's power grid. The converter station is a step towards New York’s target for 70% of the state’s electricity to come from renewable sources by 2030.

A Vermont armed robbery suspect who police say eluded capture in the past week in a vehicle, on a stolen bike, on foot and in a stolen sailboat was arrested Thursday after he was spotted in a kayak on a river, authorities said. When officers roused him, he fled at a high rate of speed, assaulting both officers with the vehicle, police said. That evening, he fled police on foot and then on a stolen bicycle before stealing a sailboat on Lake Champlain, police said. But after the sailboat rain aground at the base of lakeside cliffs, he fled, authorities said. An email was sent to police seeking to find out if Edson is being represented by an attorney.

Building backyard tiny homes can be expensive. There are three states that will help with the cost, by providing homeowners with grant money. These backyard homes, called accessory dwelling units, or ADUs, are small housing units that homeowners can build on their property. In California, where most backyard homes are being built, ADU building permits cost anywhere from $450 to $15,000 — even before construction starts, according to Backyard Unlimited, a company that builds ADUs. On a Thursday evening in late June, Clarissa Champlain learned that her 15-year-old son Brodee had been in a terrible crash, the latest teen victim of an e-bike accident. The e-bike, a model made by Rad Power, had a top speed of 20 miles per hour, but his route took him on a busy road with a 55-mile-per-hour limit. Ms. Champlain rushed to the hospital and was taken to Brodee’s room. “I went to grab his head and kiss him,” she recalled. In the days following, the town of Encinitas, where both incidents occurred, declared a state of emergency for e-bike safety.
